The technology
behind BreathOpticsTM

The technology involves extremely sensitive and resilient optical fibres linked to a sensor control system that detects movements as subtle as the breathing of a newborn or preemie weighing around 2 kg. Optical fibres function like flexible pipes that transmits light. Any minute movement, such as breathing, alters the light path and is immediately detected by a sensor control system. If there is irregular breathing, an alert will be sent to the caregiver via the supporting smartphone app.

The Sleep-Mat


BreathOpticsTM is the technology enabling the world’s first advanced baby sleep monitor, the Sleep-Mat. Unlike prevailing technology, which relies on pressure-sensing pads to sense movements and non-movements, the Sleep-Mat’s fibre-optics sensors detect an infant’s breath count and captures its breathing pattern. This information is communicated through supporting smart apps, giving parents real-time situation awareness and alerting them to instances of irregular breathing, offering them an effective and unobtrusive way to observe an infant’s health and wellness holistically. The smart apps, which are able to relate the breath count data to represent an infant’s sleep quality, provide a wide range of information important to parents around the world.
